Eagles have to do without up-and-coming receiver after shoulder injury in win against Saints

The Eagles’ win over the New Orleans Saints came at a high price, especially at the receiver position.

Receiver DeVonta Smith is in concussion protocol and a source confirmed that Britain Covey is expected to be out at least six weeks with a shoulder fracture.

Covey has played an increasingly larger role on offense since AJ Brown was out for the last two games, and it’s a role that will likely become even more important once Brown returns.

Right tackle Lane Johnson (concussion) and right guard Mekhi Becton (hand/finger) were also out of the game on Sunday. Darius Slay also had to leave the field late after Saints tackle Trevor Penning repeatedly blocked the cornerback in the out-of-bounds area after the whistle and then threw him to the ground. Slay is expected to be healthy again.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts and Covey have built a solid relationship on the field. In last week’s game against the Falcons, he had six catches on six targets and in Sunday’s 15-12 win, he was targeted once and caught a first-down pass for 11 yards.

He only played seven snaps because after his only catch, he was thrown hard to the ground by a Saints defender and landed on his shoulder.

The Eagles will miss Covey’s growing offensive role and his ability to return punts. Rookie Cooper DeJean returned punts when Covey was out and will likely continue to fill that role until Covey returns. DeJean had two chances against the Saints. He returned a ball six yards on one occasion and made a fair catch on the other.

Smith’s loss would be even more stark if he were out with a concussion caused when Saints defenseman Khristian Boyd fired at Smith while running, stopping his forward momentum, and struck him in the back, causing Smith’s helmet to slip off. There was no whistle before the hit, although several Eagles took exception to Boyd’s hit.

The return of AJ Brown would certainly help clear up a situation that needs to be resolved with Smith unable to play and now Covey out. Players like Jahan Dotson, rookie Johnny Wilson and Parris Campbell clearly need to step in. And if neither Brown nor Smith can play in Sunday’s Week 4 game at Tampa, well, who’s going to be challenged for, to say the least?

The Eagles have the luxury of a day off after Sunday’s game, giving players an extra week to recover if they are unable to play against the Buccaneers.
