Eagles Brandon Graham could leave the door open for a return after Vic Fangio’s comments

PHILADELPHIA – Vic Fangio is not joining Brandon Graham’s farewell tour.

“Brandon is still a good player, and I’ve told him several times that he’s not going to be in a ceremonial retirement parade last year,” the Eagles defensive coordinator said. “He’s going to play. He’s still playing well.”

Graham, now 36 and in his 15th season, played 48 percent of the snaps in the 34-29 season-opening win over the Green Bay Packers. In last year’s season opener at New England, Graham played 21 snaps, averaging 23 per game.

It felt like the Eagles were going to bench him under DC’s Sean Desai and Matt Patricia later in the year. Fangio isn’t going there. Not yet, anyway.

“At this age, it’s just cool that he trusts me enough to be able to say that because with the older guys, you know, like last year, I go in with a limited role and every time I come in, I try to be the knockout punch,” Graham said.

“It’s about how you process it in your head because at the end of the day I still feel like I can play. But it’s about the future and I want to help the younger players take the next step because when I’m gone I want to see them perform well.”

He may need to change his mindset and if he has a good season, Graham may reconsider his stance on retirement.

“Hey, I don’t want to leave money on the table,” Graham joked Thursday, “if it’s still like this. You know what I’m going to do, I’m going to stay ready just in case, but at the end of the day, if the calls aren’t coming in and the situation isn’t right, it’s time.”

Graham returned to the Eagles on a one-year, $5 million deal, which would be a bargain if Graham can return to his old form for the season.

What would have to happen for him to reconsider retirement? SI Eagles asked: What if he gets 10 sacks?

“So, I mean the same as you: 10 bags? If I get them, I’d say: heeeyyy!” he said, laughing.

SI Eagles then asked: “What if the number is lower than 10, what then?”

Graham assigned a number to the whole thing.

“Let’s say five plus,” he said, then laughed loudly and infectiously again. “Yes, that’s a good tip.”
