DVIDS – Video – Coverage of the Mass of Christian Burial for Sergeant Jack Hohlfeld in La Crosse, Wisconsin – home after 82 years
This is B-roll footage dated August 26, 2024, of the Mass of Christian Burial for Sergeant Jack Hohlfeld in Onalaska and La Crosse, Wisconsin. Hundreds of people attended a special Mass for Hohlfeld at St. Patrick Parish in Onalaska and the funeral service. Hohlfeld was born in Hamburg Township in Vernon County just outside of Stoddard, Wisconsin. When he was 13, his family moved to Centerville, north of Holmen. As a young adult, Jack lived briefly in both Trempealeau and La Crosse before moving to California. He volunteered and was sworn into the Army in 1938 at Fort MacArther, California. Hohlfeld was assigned to the Philippines as a member of the Headquarters Squadron, 24th Pursuit Group, U.S. Army Air Corps. When the Japanese began their attack on the Philippines on December 8, 1941, the 24th Pursuit Group was quickly disabled. The soldiers were taken to the Bataan Peninsula, where Hohlfeld fought as an infantryman and was eventually taken prisoner of war after the surrender. Hohlfeld survived the Bataan Death March and was taken to the notorious Japanese prisoner of war camp at Cabanatuan. On December 26, 1942, Hohlfeld died and was buried in mass grave 811 along with five other soldiers who died within 24 hours. Only recently was he fully identified from this grave site and returned to Wisconsin. (US Army video by Scott T. Sturkol, Public Affairs Office, Fort McCoy, Wisconsin.)
