Driver reaches historic five million miles without incident

A Wisconsin man has achieved an extraordinary milestone as a tractor-trailer driver for Schneider National.

Greg Swift will be the third person in the company’s history to drive five million miles without a preventable accident.

To celebrate this success, Schneider hosted an event at the company headquarters in Green Bay, where Swift symbolically completed the last mile.

Upon his arrival, Schneider welcomed Swift with a special “Sound the Horn” event, the company’s long-standing tradition of celebrating successes throughout the company with the sound of a truck horn reverberating throughout the office building. Local 5 News spoke with Swift about his historic accomplishment after 33 years of driving for Schneider.

“I’ve been to every state except Hawaii and Alaska,” Swift explained. “I’ve been to most of the provinces in Canada, hauling system freight. I never thought we’d ever get to five million miles. When I got to three million, I thought that was a crazy number, and then I got to four, and honestly, I hadn’t even thought about five, but here we are.”

The 56-year-old said he plans to drive until he is 65, which means he still has plenty of time to add more accolades to his driving career.

“I’ve got a little bit left in the tank,” Swift laughed. “Six (million) is not impossible. Normally, with the number of miles I drive, that happens about every seven years.”

Swift ended the interview by praising Schneider for organizing such a big event for himself.

“When I turned the corner and the police officers were leading the way, I was just amazed at how many colleagues were out there supporting me,” Swift said. “It was a crazy, wild dream. I only see people like that in stadiums and at big events. And all this for me? I was amazed at the number of people.”

In addition to the big celebration and ceremony, Swift received a bonus check for $10,000 for all his hard work and dedication to Schneider National.
