Driver crashed into tree and was rescued from burning car

HIGHLANDS — A 17-year-old was taken to hospital and rescued from his burning car after colliding with a tree.

According to a post from the Lone Peak Fire Department, an off-duty Lone Peak Police Department officer was on his way home when he saw the vehicle “fly by at a high rate of speed.”

The car was reportedly traveling westbound on Canal Boulevard in Highland around 12:03 a.m. Thursday.

The officer stated that he turned on his hazard lights and turned around to “try to stop traffic.”

Officials said the driver ran a red light on Alpine Highway and “failed to negotiate the curve.” The car left the road, struck a tree in Windsor Meadows Park and then burst into flames.

The post said the driver was trapped in the car, but police were able to pull him out “enough to keep his airway open.” Officers were eventually able to open the door and get the driver out of his car.

Firefighters helped the driver and extinguished the car fire.

The driver was taken to a hospital, from where a rescue helicopter flew him to the burn center. Officials said his condition is currently unknown.

There were no other passengers in the car.
