Supra, one of the most famous brand names in Toyota history, was revived as a modern car in 2020.

Built primarily in Germany in partnership with BMW, the 2025 Supra is a close cousin of the BMW Z4. This front-engine, rear-wheel-drive, two-door sports car is just as delightful today as its predecessor. Today’s Supra GR 3 is available in two versions, 3.0 and 3.0 Premium, with either an eight-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual at no extra cost.

Otherwise, Toyota has removed the previous turbo four-cylinder engine from the range for this model year and replaced it with a powerful inline six-cylinder turbo engine with 382 hp.

So how fast does it fly? The Supra GR 3’s acceleration time from zero to 60 mph is about four seconds. The sprint from zero to 100 mph takes just 9.6 seconds. To reach the top speed of 130 mph, you’ll need 16.1 seconds. Fuel economy is reasonable for a high-performance vehicle, with EPA estimates of 23 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway with the automatic transmission, and 19 and 27 mpg with the manual transmission, respectively.

True to its high-performance heritage, the ride is a little stiff. The Supra 3 works very well on the track, a winding road, or as a daily driver for commuting to and from work with stops for shopping on the way home.

Supra is an exotic sports car with 19-inch forged aluminum wheels and Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. These tires (255R-19 – 375R-19) are rated for speed class Y and allow for long, safe driving at higher speeds. Iowans should know that cars in this class are notorious for getting stuck in snow. This is not a defect. Instead, think of the low ground clearance.

As is typical for a classic sports pair, the interior of the Toyota Supra 3 is tight. The cargo area is also tight, but offers space for about a week's worth of groceries. (Toyota)

From elbow to elbow, the cabin is tight, as you’d expect from a classic sports coupe. However, the dual dome roof provides additional headroom. Taking the tight fit into account, even the widest and tallest people can still find a reasonably comfortable seating position. The tallest drivers, however, will feel cramped.

The standard 14-way power seats make the most of what precious space there is. The 10-cubic-foot cargo area, accessed via a tailgate and hidden behind the bucket seats, is similarly tight. There’s enough room in this everyday car for four carry-on suitcases or about a week’s worth of groceries. Pack light.

The central display of the Supra GR 3 is an 8.8-inch screen. Both navigation and Apple CarPlay are available. Curiously, Android Auto is not available. A 12-speaker JBL audio system is optional.

This week’s test car included the optional Safety and Technology Plus JBL package ($3,511). For that extra investment, you’re rewarded with radar cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, a 12-speaker 500-watt JBL audio system, and wireless Apple CarPlay. That goes beyond the Supra 3.0’s litany of standard features: dual-zone automatic climate control, adaptive suspension, heated seats, forward collision warning, lane departure mitigation, and automatic high beams.

Here’s a surprise: Every GR Supra comes with a free one-day session at a high-performance driving event, as well as a one-year membership to the National Auto Sport Association, a sports car racing organization. Many future Supra owners will likely invest in track time to burn rubber and drive fast without fear of a speeding ticket.

The limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles, the powertrain is covered for five years or 60,000 miles. Complimentary scheduled maintenance is covered for two years or 25,000 miles.

Toyota recently announced that the Supra will be retired in 2026. Get one while it’s still available.

Automotive journalist Tim Banse wrote the Gazette’s “Motoring” auto review column from 1989 to 2013 and published articles in Popular Mechanics and Yachting magazines.
