Donations for the LPD social work unit are always needed

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Local law enforcement is handing out more than just tickets…

Lansing Police Department social workers also distribute essential items to those in need. Social workers often connect with community members when they are at their worst. In these moments, social workers connect people with assistance to help them out of dangerous situations.

“What is the reason for contacting the police? Usually it’s unmet needs,” says Jessica Martin, a social worker with the Lansing Police Department. “They don’t have access to medical or mental health care, they don’t have adequate housing and other things that are basic needs.”

The unit connects people to a wide range of resources ranging from sexual violence assistance to substance abuse help to diapers. It has no operating funds, meaning it relies on donations and community partners like the Lansing Housing Commission.

“They’re a great partner for us and we have the same goal,” said Doug Fleming, executive director of the Lansing Housing Commission. “I wish they had more money so they could do more.”

When the commission learned of the social worker’s need for diapers, it immediately stepped in and donated nearly 1,500. The diapers are helping parents like a mother of three who was recently contacted by a Lansing police officer.

“One of her children is currently undergoing cancer treatment and she has two other very young children in the house, both of whom are in diapers or nappies,” Martin said.

“People don’t understand what they (first responders) see every day, including families like this,” Fleming said, becoming emotional.

In recent years, the LPD’s social work unit has responded to over 2,600 requests for assistance.

With donations like the one received Wednesday from the Lansing Housing Commission, they can support even more families.

The LPD’s Social Work Unit is always accepting donations of non-perishable food, essentials, and toys for children. They also support the elderly, veterans, and many other groups.
