Donald Trump mocked his former presidential colleague Jimmy Carter during a campaign speech on his predecessor’s historic 100th birthday.

According to PBS, Trump, 78, spoke about the 39th President of the United States on Tuesday, October 1, at a production facility in Waunakee, Wisconsin.

After calling President Joe Biden the worst president in US history, Trump told the crowd: “Jimmy Carter is the luckiest man because Jimmy Carter is considered a brilliant president by comparison,” according to The Daily Beast and USA today.

Carter, a Democrat, served as president for one term from 1977 to 1981. In his re-election bid in 1980, he was defeated by Republican Ronald Reagan.

Trump’s comment on the Carter legacy came as other Republican leaders put aside partisanship to honor the longest-living president’s centennial, which came more than 19 months after he entered hospice care in February 2023.

Carter has criticized Trump in the past. During an interview with CBS News in 2018, he claimed that Trump was “very careless with the truth,” a claim that was also expressed in an interview with CBS News The Washington Post in the same year.

“I think he’s a disaster … in terms of human rights and equal treatment of people,” Carter said at the time, before former first lady Rosalynn Carter – who died in November 2023 – weighed in.

“The worst thing is that he’s not telling the truth, and that just hurts everything,” she added.
