Dominant pitching performance for Milwaukee

play

The Milwaukee Brewers are playing for a win as they play out the series.

For the second time in as many nights, they faced a New York Mets team fighting for its playoff existence. Six pitchers combined to allow two hits without a walk and Joey Ortiz drove in three runs in a 6-0 shutout at American Family Field on Saturday.

It was the ninth time the Brewers eliminated an opponent this season.

Air to breathe in the eighth

New York’s bullpen did a good job behind Quintana, retiring nine consecutive batters in the eighth.

Garrett Mitchell ended that series with a leadoff single, William Contreras followed with a walk, then Willy Adames singled for Mitchell, making the game 3-0.

After Gary Sanchez loaded the bases, Ortiz drew a four-pitch walk from Reed Garrett. Danny Young came into the game at that point and Andruw Monasterio hit a two-run single up the middle to give the Brewers a four-run inning.

Milwaukee’s pitching dominates

Starter Tobias Myers (9-6) was in top form as he allowed just one hit with five strikeouts in four solid innings behind opener Jared Koenig.

Joel Payamps (three strikeouts) was dominant in his inning behind Myers, and Aaron Ashby and Nick Mears followed with 1-2-3 frames of their own.

Joey Ortiz delivers in the clutch

It was no surprise that Mets starter Jose Quintana — 9-6 with a 2.94 ERA against the Brewers in 22 career appearances (21 starts) — struck out early.

But Milwaukee finally took a lead against him in the fourth when Adames singled and Rhys Hoskins and Isaac Collins both walked to load the bases with two outs.

That brought Ortiz into the game, who fell behind 2-1 in the count but fought back and drained a two-run single to left-center that gave the Brewers a 2-0 lead.

Quintana allowed five hits and two walks while striking out nine over 4 ⅓ innings.
