For the second straight year, Miami Dolphins linebacker Jaelan Phillips will miss the end of the season due to injury.

Phillips announced on Instagram on Wednesday that he suffered a knee injury that would require “reconstructive surgery” and end his 2024 season.

“I have unfinished business to attend to and I will emerge victorious from this process,” Phillips wrote.

Phillips suffered the injury in the third quarter of Monday’s loss to the Titans, which was his fourth appearance since tearing his Achilles tendon that ended his 2023 season in Week 12.

After recording 15.5 sacks in two seasons, Phillips had recorded 6.5 sacks in eight games in a 2023 season that was poised for a breakout season before the season-ending non-contact injury.

Phillips’ recovery involved He worked his way back from three months in which he was unable to walk and was reinstated to the Dolphins’ roster before the second game of the preseason. He will now begin another rehabilitation process in the fall.

“I’m bleeding for this game and my team,” Phillips wrote in the caption of his post. “I’m devastated to miss another season, but my determination has never been stronger… I will be back.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Phillips is “hoping to return in 2025.” The Dolphins have already exercised Phillips’ $13.24 million fifth-year club option to keep him in Miami next season.

Phillips had recorded 1.0 sacks, two passes defensed, six tackles and two quarterback hits before his season-ending injury.

The Dolphins will now be missing a top defenseman as the team looks to rebound from its 1-3 start to the season while still missing starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and likely star running back Raheem Mostert.

The Miami pass rush, which ranked third in the NFL with 56 sacks last season, is near the bottom of the league leaderboard so far in 2024 with seven sacks in four games.

The Dolphins will need rookies Chop Robinson and Mohamed Kamara in addition to Emmanuel Ogbah and Quinton Bell to improve those stats in Phillips’ absence. Bradley Chubb is still sidelined in rehab with a torn ACL, but he could ultimately help replace Phillips if the team’s projections that he could return this season come true.
