Does this carpet hack for removing pet stains really work?

Someone who calls himself a “hacker” has an idea how to clean up dog accidents on carpets and rugs using two common household items.

The tip comes from creator Daddybrownn (@daddybrownn), who garnered more than 326,000 views for a video posted on Sunday by Monday morning.

He begins, “This is the quickest and easiest way to remove the smell of dog urine from your carpet. If you have a puppy or a dog, you know that sometimes they pee on the carpet and that makes us angry because now the carpet is ruined, right?”

He answers his own question: “It’s not. It’s actually quite easy to clean it up.”

How to clean your carpet

The formula is simple: one cup of white vinegar, one cup of water and two teaspoons of baking soda.

Then he instructs, “Put it in a spray bottle, shake it, and mix it all together. Every time you use it, you have to shake it again, but you take it and spray it on the stain, let the stain soak in it. You let it sit on the stain for about 10 minutes, and then you blot it up with paper towels.”

“Don’t scrub,” he warns. “Don’t rub in circles, dab. That’s like tapping.”

It is recommended to do this until the paper towels stop turning yellow, at which point, he claims, the stain should be gone from the carpet.

He warns viewers a second time to dab and not scrub.

The American Kennel Club offers the same advice, adding, “A word of warning: The wet towels will probably smell, but that’s a good thing. Smelly towels mean you’re pulling out as much urine and its odor as possible.”

Viewers are grateful

The commentators were grateful for the tip, but for some it came too late.

“I threw away my carpet yesterday,” said one. “I wish I had seen this before.”

Another said: “I threw away a rug that I loved. I wish I had seen this a few months ago.”

Someone else said: “Thank you! I have an old dog who has bladder problems and this will save my sanity!”

The creator is familiar with dog smells; in another video reported by the Daily Dot, he uses baking soda to freshen up a car that a dog has been in.

The Daily Dot contacted the creator via a TikTok comment.
