Walker Buehler hasn’t looked the same since returning from injury, and this Sunday Night Baseball appearance isn’t going to get any better.
Two of baseball’s most famous franchises will face off on this edition of Sunday Night Baseball as the Atlanta Braves and the Los Angeles Dodgers meet.
Walker Buehler is in a rough patch, and my Dodgers vs. Braves predictions predict Atlanta will attack him early and often. Find out why in my MLB picks below for September 15.
Dodgers vs. Braves Prediction
My best bet
Braves first five moneyline (-110 at FanDuel)
My analysis
Once you get used to the name and the aspect of supporting a team trying to avoid a sweep, you quickly run out of reasons to bet on the Los Angeles Dodgers here.
Walker Buehler has been awful since coming off the injury — particularly in his last three starts — where he posted an ERA over six. If you’re betting on him bouncing back or turning around, it’s almost certainly because of his past performance.
But since we have not seen The Buehler since his return from injury, I tend to think something is seriously wrong. Until then, I have to tune him out. In this case, I see an advantage early in the game rather than from a full nine innings perspective.
To put it simply, the Atlanta Braves have the better pitcher and the better matchup.
Even at his age, Braves right-hander Charlie Morton can still dominate games when he gets ground balls consistently. He will enter this game ranked in the top 75% in ground ball rate, a tradition unlike any other in his entire career.
Doing that against this Dodgers team is probably the biggest challenge for any team. However, their league-best rate hasn’t been sustainable either, as we’ve seen lately. LA has been just below the league average in ground ball rate over the last 10 games, and I don’t expect that to change here. Given Buehler’s struggles, that will be enough.
What’s most notable about the Dodgers pitcher is his whiff and chase rate, which are on the low end of the scale. This is especially important when playing against Atlanta because this team has consistently chased a lot of pitches over the past five years.
Since that doesn’t happen often these days, I expect the Braves to punish Buehler’s main issues, which are that he’s completely average in all areas when it comes to hard hit rate, barrel rate, and exit velocity.
Shohei Ohtani Selection: Pickpocket
My best bet
Shohei Ohtani Over 0.5 stolen bases (+290 at bet365)
My analysis
With 14 games remaining, Ohtani needs three home runs and two stolen bases to make history.
Over the last two seasons, Morton has had a successful stolen base market of 77%, one of the highest in baseball. His tendency to give up free base on walks only helps us here, as Ohtani has a walk percentage that is in the top 12%.
Dodgers vs. Braves – Same Game Combo (SGP)
Braves first five -0.5
Charlie Morton Over 2.5 Walks
As always, we have to improvise with our best bet and take the spread instead of the money line, since no book allows the use of F5 ML in a parlay bet of the same game.
The Dodgers are the most patient team in baseball, and Ohtani’s walk rate spans the entire team. LA enters today with the third-highest walk rate in baseball, and Morton is no stranger to giving away free runs. That number should be more like a coin flip, and since it isn’t, we’re taking advantage of it.
