Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani is the first Major League Baseball player to hit 50 home runs and steal more than 50 bases in a season

MIAMI, Florida – Shohei Ohtani accomplished something on Thursday that no other Major League Baseball player has ever accomplished: He hit 50 home runs and stole more than 50 bases in a single season.

The Dodgers’ $700 million superstar became the only member of MLB’s 50/50 club when he hit both marks against the Marlins in Florida.

Ohtani has stolen two bases, giving him a total of 51 this season.

For his 49th home run, Ohtani hit a 1-1 slider by Miami Marlins relief pitcher George Soriano 438 feet to the second deck in right-center field in the sixth inning, tying Shawn Green for the most home runs in a season in Dodger history.

Ohtani opened the game with a double against Edward Cabrera and stole third base for his 50th stolen base at the start of a double steal with Freddie Freeman, who moved to first base on a walk.
Ohtani stole another base in the second inning, making it his last 28 successful attempts to steal a base.

He stole his 49th base in Wednesday’s 8-4 win over the Marlins. He hit his 48th home run in the Series opener Tuesday night, connecting on a 1-1 sweeper by Marlins right-hander Darren McCaughan and sending the ball 402 feet into right field.

He became the sixth player in Major League history and the fastest of all time to reach 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in a season, all in just 126 games.

Manager Dave Roberts said before Thursday’s game that he noticed Ohtani becoming more aggressive on the bases in the second half of the season.

“I also think Shohei has realized how good he has become or can become as a base stealer,” Roberts said. “I think he likes the challenge of studying pitchers and learning their tendencies. I think that’s something that fascinates him.”

Ohtani surpassed his previous career high in stolen bases, which was 26 with the Angels in 2021. He accomplished that as a two-way player, but this season Ohtani has not pitched due to his recovery from elbow surgery, allowing him to focus on batting and baserunning as the Dodgers’ designated hitter.
