Dodgers sign Yoshinobu Yamamoto and DFA Nick Ramirez

20:23: Los Angeles also activated Brusdar grater from the 15-day IL and placed Anthony Banda on the injured list. Banda broke his left hand, interrupting a solid year for the 31-year-old left-hander. Banda posted a 3.23 ERA while striking out nearly a quarter of his opponents in 47 1/3 innings, a personal best.

16:41: The Dodgers reinstated Yoshinobu Yamamoto from the 60-day injured list to start tonight against the Cubs. Los Angeles has the left-handed relief Nick Ramirez for assignment to make room on the active roster and the 40-man roster.

Manager Dave Roberts announced last week that Yamamoto would return tonight. It will be the Japanese star’s first major league appearance since June 15. Yamamoto missed nearly three months with a rotator cuff strain. He should get some roster time to continue building his shoulder strength for the postseason.

Aside from his disastrous first major league start, Yamamoto has pitched like the top pitcher the Dodgers envisioned. In his last 13 starts, he has a 2.34 earned run average and a 28.1% strikeout rate in 73 innings. If he can quickly return to form now that he’s healthy, he could start the first game of a playoff series.

Ramirez loses his spot on the roster for the second time this season. The Dodgers released him because of their trade deadline. He came off the waivers list and accepted a trade to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Los Angeles brought him back on Sunday. Ramirez pitched the final two innings of a 10-4 loss last night. He allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits.

Ramirez was signed by the Yankees in April and has pitched in eight games for the Dodgers. The 35-year-old has allowed 11 runs with seven walks and five strikeouts in 13 1/3 innings. He was an effective middle relief arm for New York captain Aaron Boone last year, posting a 2.66 ERA with a meager 5.2% walk rate in 40 2/3 innings.

The Dodgers will place Ramirez on waivers again this week. He will likely be released and would have the right to opt into free agency, although he could stay with the organization as a reserve player if he goes directly to OKC. Ramirez would become a minor league free agent in the offseason anyway if the Dodgers don’t bring him back.
