Dodgers manager talks about the possibility of Shohei Ohtani pitching in the playoffs

Shohei Ohtani showed off some long passes in the outfield before the Los Angeles Dodgers’ game against the Atlanta Braves on Friday – another step on the two-way star’s path to returning to the mound.

Could he possibly pitch in the postseason?

“Anything is possible,” said manager Dave Roberts. “I hope that’s something he’ll use as motivation for his rehab. The chances of it working are very slim, but they’re not zero.”

Ohtani hasn’t pitched this season – his first with the Dodgers – after undergoing elbow surgery, but he’s still having a potentially historic season as the team’s designated hitter, trying to become the first player with 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a major league season.

Heading into the opener of a four-game series in Atlanta, Ohtani had 47 home runs and 48 stolen bases — and with 16 games left in the regular season, he’s on pace to surpass 50 in both categories.

More injury news

While they remained optimistic about getting more out of Ohtani this season, the first-place Dodgers suffered a setback in Tyler Glasnow’s recovery from elbow tendinitis.

Glasnow, a right-hander with a 9-6 record and a 3.49 ERA, was scheduled to pitch a simulated game on Friday, but the session was cut short during warmups in the bullpen when he felt pain in his arm, raising concerns that his injury is more serious than initially thought.

Glasnow was placed on the 15-day injured list on August 16, which was described at the time as a rather cautious measure.

“It’s obviously a setback,” Roberts said. “I don’t know what that means for the next few days. I know we’ll reassess the situation over the next few days and see how it feels and when we can get back to it.”

The team is obviously concerned that Glasnow will not be able to throw again this season, which would be another blow to the injury-plagued rotation.

“It’s certainly not helpful or positive,” Roberts said.
