Hurricane Helene is targeting Florida and experts predict it could quickly develop into a major hurricane before making landfall on Thursday.

  • Do you live on the barrier island?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may be asked by authorities to evacuate before a storm.

Know your home. Homes built after 2002 generally have measures in place to make them more structurally stable in the event of a hurricane. Check the Florida Building Code for more details.

If you live in a home that is only accessible by bridge, be aware that emergency officials generally close bridges to traffic when winds reach a certain speed.

Due to the threat of an approaching hurricane, residents of trailer parks are asked to leave their homes and move to safer locations.

How do you find out if you live in an evacuation zone?

You can find out if and which evacuation zone you are in on the Florida Division of Emergency Management website.

Go to the website and enter your address. If your home is in one of the colored areas, these are flood zones where you may be asked to evacuate by local authorities.
