District may decide on new tax rate on Monday

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The El Paso County District Court is scheduled to vote on and possibly adopt the tax rate for the upcoming fiscal year at its meeting on Monday, August 26.

The Commissioners Court may set any tax rate below the rate approved by the voters. Rates in excess of that rate require voter approval.

County commissioners will listen to public comments and adopt a “rate that meets the needs of this fiscal year,” the county said.

Here is a breakdown of the county:

  • The voter approval tax rate calculated by the tax collector is 0.478306 per $100 of taxable property value.

  • The no-new-revenue tax rate calculated by the tax collector is $0.426323 per $100 of taxable property value. A county official told KTSM that the court is expected to adopt the no-new-revenue tax rate on Monday.

  • The current tax rate is 0.458889. So if the court accepts the no-new-revenue tax rate, that would be a 3-cent reduction in the current tax rate. “And it would be a rate almost equivalent to the tax rate from 10 years ago,” the district said.

Monday’s session begins at 9:30 a.m. in the Enrique Moreno County Courthouse in the County Commissioners Courtroom of Judge Alicia R. Chacon, 500 E. San Antonio.
