Discover the big “Pee Pee” fire truck, Ohio’s newest protector

Don’t pretend you’re above toilet humor—you get it. You’re here because you find the idea of a fire truck with “Pee Pee” written on the side funny. Not just because of the name, but because of the obvious implication. I mean, in an emergency, you have to use what you have on hand. Thankfully, that probably won’t be urine, no matter what the Pee Pee fire truck’s paint job suggests.

This oddly decorated fire truck was manufactured by All American Fire Equipment, which posted photos on Facebook of the vehicle undergoing a pre-delivery inspection. The Freightliner pump truck (or tanker truck, it’s unclear) is for use by the Waverly Fire Department in Waverly, Ohio, and is colored in honor of the local high school’s mascot, a tiger. Why it says “Pee Pee” on the bumper is a nod to another community served by the Waverly Fire Department: Pee Pee Township.

Pee Pee Township (population: 7,400) is believed to have been named for nearby Pee Pee Creek, which you’ve probably seen as a stopover between Poo Poo Point in Washington and Pee Pee Island in Newfoundland, Canada. Pee Pee Creek itself is named not for the liquid that flows through it, but for the initials carved into a tree on its banks by an early European settler, which read PP. These initials had neither their current meaning when they were scrawled nor when the township was founded in 1798. They didn’t acquire their modern meaning until nearly a century later, with the Oxford English Dictionary recording the first known written use of “pee pee” as a reference to urine in 1890.

Places with such funny names naturally tend to produce humorously lettered police vehicles, such as the police cars of Sandwich, Massachusetts and Climax, Georgia. The best example I personally saw in my travels was Pie Town, New Mexico, whose town bakery honors the community with a damn good apple pie. More specifically, a green chili Apple pie – don’t leave town without eating a piece of it.
