Diesel leaks into Willow Creek near Mapleton after accident

MONONA COUNTY, Iowa (KCAU) – Diesel fuel leaked into a tributary in northwest Iowa and then reached a creek.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) said the incident occurred Sunday near the intersection of Highway 141 and Plum Avenue. The driver of the pickup truck reportedly lost control of his vehicle and went off the road, landing in Pumpkin Run. Pumpkin Run is a small tributary northwest of Mapleton that flows into Willow Creek to the east.

The pickup truck was carrying a 50-gallon drum of red diesel. As a result of the accident, the drum of diesel and a small amount of oil was dumped into Pumpkin Run. The red diesel then flowed downstream and reached Willow Creek.

Officials placed booms in Pumpkin Run and further downstream in Willow Creek south of the intersection of 120th Street and Highway 141. Further downstream in Simmons Creak, DNR officials did not see any diesel. They did not smell any diesel there, either.
