The battle for the gold medal between the USA and China ended in the last competition of the Olympic Games in Paris. And after 16 days of competition, the USA and China will share the title for most gold medals in 2024.
The United States and China will finish the Paris Olympics with 40 gold medals each. The United States won the most medals with 126 medals (40 gold, 44 silver and 42 bronze). China came in second with 91 medals (40 gold, 27 silver and 24 bronze).
The United States has spent the last few days battling with China for the gold medal lead at the Paris Olympics. The United States entered the final day of competition one gold medal behind China (38 to 39).
China secured a gold medal early on Sunday when Li Wenwen won the main medal in the women’s 81kg weightlifting event. The United States also took gold when Jennifer Valente defended her omnium title in track cycling.
With the USA one gold medal behind China, it would now come down to the women’s basketball final for a chance to tie China for the most gold medals at the Paris Olympics.
In a very close game throughout, the US women’s basketball team won 67-66 and won gold medals. It was the eighth victory in a row, which is a record for the team. The medals in women’s basketball are regularly the last to be awarded at the Summer Olympics.
The United States won a total of five medals on Sunday, including gold in women’s basketball, gold in the women’s omnium (cycling), silver in the women’s freestyle 76 kg (wrestling), silver in the women’s team volleyball and bronze in the men’s water polo.
The United States’ bronze medal total dropped by one on Sunday after the Federation Internationale de Gymnastique and the IOC announced that Jordan Chiles’ medal in the women’s floor final would go to Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu following a ruling by an international arbitration panel.
In Tokyo three years ago, the USA emerged victorious in the gold medal race, defeating China 39 gold medals to 38. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the USA won a total of 113 medals. In Rio 2016, the USA was more dominant, winning 46 gold medals, Great Britain 27 and China 26.
The USA won a total of 126 medals in Paris, which was the third-highest number for the United States and the highest at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, when the USA won 174 medals. A good sign for Los Angeles 2028?
