Dick Van Dyke dances at the 2024 Emmys after his 98th birthday special

(EDITOR’S NOTE: This story has been updated. It was originally believed that Dick Van Dyke, at 98, was the oldest Creative Arts Emmy winner. This has been corrected in the current text.)

Dick Van Dyke was overjoyed at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmy Awards!

The 98-year-old’s birthday special took place on Saturday, September 7th. Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magicwon the award for Outstanding Variety Special (Prerecorded). CBS’s two-hour tribute special, which featured archival footage and live performances of songs from Van Dyke’s illustrious career, aired in December.

Although it was initially believed that Van Dyke’s win made him the oldest winner of a Creative Arts Emmy at 98 years, 8 months and 26 days – surpassing the late Norman Lear, who previously held the record for his own special, Live in front of a studio audience: Norman Lear’s All in the Family and Good Times, which he won in 2020 at the age of 98 years, 5 months and 26 days – later confirmed diversity that Van Dyke was not listed as a producer on the special, according to the project’s IMDb page.

This means that Lear holds the record as the oldest Creative Arts Emmy winner, and Van Dyke did not win an Emmy on September 7, despite taking the stage to give an acceptance speech.

“Thank you so much, this reception, I can’t tell you what it means,” Van Dyke said after his special was announced as the winner. He then reminded the audience, “I’ll be 99 next month,” before showing off a few dance moves that showed he’s still as lively as ever despite his age.

Van Dyke continued, pointing to his wife Arlene Silver, who joined him on stage as executive producer of the special. “The young lady who got that award, you might think nepotism and I would understand, but that lady got the job as producer of the Dick Van Dyke especially because she knows me inside and out and knows how I work and doesn’t take any nonsense from anyone. Arlene Van Dyke!”

Arlene then thanked the audience before addressing her husband directly. “Thank you so much,” she said. “It’s an honor to spend my life with you… We received four nominations who put love, heart and soul into the show. To honor you: You have created endless joy and playfulness for generations to come.”

Later in the press room, Van Dyke was beside himself with excitement, repeatedly telling reporters that he “couldn’t believe it.” Then he proudly announced, “I’m probably the oldest Emmy winner,” after which Arlene noted that Lear had won the title first.

When asked what advice he would give to the next generation of talent, Van Dyke told reporters, “You have to keep at it. You’re going to go through tough times and have a lot of auditions… but you have to keep at it. Be patient if you have the confidence and it’s very important to believe that you can do it.”

“I don’t know how I did it!” he added jokingly.

When asked what legacy he would like to leave behind, Van Dyke said he hopes he will be remembered for his “laugh” and for “making people laugh for 75 years.”

“I’ve been in the business for 75 years. I can’t believe I’m still here performing,” he said, before joking, “I’m looking for work, if anyone is!”

Van Dyke had previously spoken to PEOPLE about his two-hour tribute special and recalled thinking, “I don’t deserve this.”

“It’s hard to say how I felt,” he said. “I came home and said, ‘You know what? It’s going to take me a couple of days to really understand that it happened.’ I never expected such recognition. My whole life had passed me by. I didn’t realize that I had done so many things in my 75 years in show business.”

The legendary actor’s win at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards came just three months after he secured another historic win at the Daytime Emmy Awards.

In June, Van Dyke became the oldest Daytime Emmy winner ever when he won the award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Daytime Drama Series for his role as Timothy Robicheaux in Time of longing.

“I can’t believe this,” he said as he accepted the award alongside his wife. “I’m 98 years old, can you believe it? This really caps off 80 years in the business.”

Before his win, he told PEOPLE in an exclusive statement that the nomination was “very exciting.”

“After all, it took my buddy Drake Hogestyn and I 75 years to get on a soap opera! He’s the real reason that happened and deserves recognition and thanks,” he said at the time. “This is a whole different honor for me; I rarely get recognized for dramatic or serious acting – comedy and musicals are my specialty, after all. I’m so honored and it’s going to be a fun night celebrating the entire daytime TV community.”

In the soap opera, Van Dyke played Timothy Robicheaux in a four-episode story arc. His character bridges the gap in his memory with the help of musical numbers and exercises with the help of Marlena Evans (Diedre Hall), John Black (Hogestyn) and Steve Johnson (Stephen Nichols).
