The National Park Service (NPS) is spearheading a collaborative effort to develop a comprehensive land conservation plan for the geography of the Appalachia Keystone Initiative. The goal of this initiative is to preserve and restore the rich biodiversity and ecological significance of the Appalachian Mountains. Project funds will be used to hire contractors and staff to develop a detailed conservation plan in consultation with a diverse group of stakeholders. The remainder will be used to complete priority abandoned mine restoration and reclamation projects on the NPS lands identified in the plan.

Why? The Appalachians are home to a diverse range of plant and animal species that contribute significantly to the ecological richness and natural beauty of the region. This region is critical for the headwaters of many major rivers on the East Coast, and thus for water quality and ecosystem health downstream. The Appalachians also serve as a major “highway” for species migration, with extensive forests providing resilience to climate change while endangered bottlenecks pose significant threats to northward migrating species. Addressing these challenges is critical to maintaining the ecological integrity of the region and improving human and environmental health.

What else? This initiative is part of the Department of the Interior’s Restoration and Resilience Framework and the newly launched Appalachia Keystone Initiative. By integrating resources, expertise, and innovative ideas, the project aims to address the critical intersection of ecological, social, and economic needs in the region. The conservation approach will not only guide restoration efforts, but will also focus on reclaiming abandoned mining areas, improving habitat connectivity, and promoting sustainable land use practices.
