The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is monitoring possible tropical developments in the same region where Hurricane Helene formed earlier this week.

A low pressure area could form in the region by early next week, and the system is expected to slowly move into the Gulf of Mexico, where further development is likely.

Once the system is in the Gulf, a tropical depression could form by mid to late next week.

It’s still too early to determine what impact, if any, the system might have on the continental U.S., but locals should keep an eye on the forecast as it develops.

Timeline of Hurricane Helene’s development

The NHC initially began monitoring the area where Hurricane Helene eventually began to develop on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.

Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine officially formed on the morning of Monday, September 23, and was designated Tropical Storm Helene on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 24.

The storm made landfall near Perry, Florida, at 11:10 p.m. two days later as a Category 4 hurricane, causing catastrophic storm surge along the Florida coast and historic flooding in the Southeast.
