Game notes: After a disappointing loss at the start of their series against the San Diego Padres, the Detroit Tigers return to Petco Park on Wednesday hoping to make amends.
The Tigers looked completely worn out after traveling to the West Coast to face the Padres on Labor Day and suffered a frustrating 3-0 loss. But that was just one loss in an otherwise solid Tigers series that began with a sweep of the Chicago White Sox last month.
Because of their August offense, the Tigers are back in the wild-card race and playing important games in September, and that’s exactly the kind of experience freshman Keider Montero needs.
Montero’s first year with the Tigers was a bit of a mixed bag, but he seemed to be back in form last month, pitching five or more innings in all six starts and posting a 3.82 ERA, a significant improvement over his 5.46 ERA the previous month.
Wednesday should be another good test for Montero as he faces a Padres team that is also involved in a wild-card race.
After Wednesday’s game, the Tigers will play the Padres one more time before heading to the coast to begin a series with the Oakland Athletics. This will be the last time the Tigers will play at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.
