The Detroit Tigers took a step closer to a wild-card spot in the American League playoffs with a 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday, leaving fans excited for a possible playoff series in Detroit.

“It’s exciting,” said Dave Butler, 42, as he played catch with his 11-year-old son Ethan (both of Detroit) outside Comerica Park before Wednesday night’s game against the Rays.

“It’s been ten years since we last performed and it’s nice to see,” Butler said.

The Tigers, who entered the All-Star break with a 47-50 record and 6½ games out of a playoff spot, have turned their season around and Tigers fans across the country are excited, including Tyler Santiago, 26, of New Jersey.

Santiago, a longtime Tigers fan, told the Free Press that this was the first time this year he was able to see the Tigers in person.

“They’re hot and they don’t quit. I’m looking forward to watching them win some games. Riley Greene is my guy and I’m waiting for him to do something tonight,” Santiago said.

Entering Wednesday, the Tigers (83-74) held a two-game lead over the Minnesota Twins (81-76) and Seattle Mariners (82-77) and were tied with the Kansas City Royals for the last two of the three AL wild-card spots (with the Royals holding the head-to-head tiebreaker).

“These are not the same old Tigers. This is great for the city of Detroit and the fans. We’ve been waiting for this and now it’s here,” Santiago said.
