Detroit Tigers at Houston Astros, AL Wild Card Series

Riley Greene is cleaning up today and hits a high cutter. Keith strikes out on an outside change, but Spencer Torkelson gets a hit up the middle, but the throw pulls first baseman Victor Caratini out of the bag and Torkelson is safe. McKinstry gets a hit and drops to left center field for a double as Torkelson advances to third, but Trey Sweeney beats to Altuve to thwart that scoring chance.

Now Tyler Holton is the second straight starting left tackle the Astros have faced in this series. Jose Altuve runs the ball and hits it to third baseman Zach McKinstry, who throws it to first base just in time for the first out. Kyle Tucker struck out swinging and Yordan Alvarez struck out Colt Keith for the bottom of the first inning.

Meadows flies to Jason Heyward in left field for the first time. Kerry Carpenter is in the starting lineup after a pinch-hit in Game 1 but flies to center field, then Matt Vierling looks at strike three as Brown starts strong against the Tigers.

First pitch

Detroit’s own Hunter Brown will start Game 2 for the Astros, while Parker Meadows will be the leadoff hitter for the Tigers. The first pitch is a foul ball from Meadows.

Before the game

The Tigers are one win away from advancing to the MLB postseason, but they must defeat a determined Astros team in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series.

Buoyed by Tarik Skubal’s dominant Game 1 performance on the mound, Detroit went to Minute Maid Park and cruised to a 3-1 victory over Houston on Tuesday. A three-run second inning made the difference, and the Tigers had eight batters record at least one hit, making for an impressive coming out party for the young team.

If the Tigers win, it will be the third straight postseason in which a No. 6 seed advances to the divisional round since MLB expanded to six teams making the playoffs in 2022, winning the ALCS in seven straight seasons not be an easy task.

Another lefty in Tyler Holton will take the mound for the Tigers, followed by bulk relief. Meanwhile, right-hander Hunter Brown, a Wayne State product, will be tasked with starting against his hometown team and helping force a win for the Astros in Game 3.
