Princess Theodora of Greece will marry American lawyer Matthew Kumar on September 28 in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens.
Guests such as Queen Sofia of Spain are expected to arrive at 5.30pm to watch the royal couple exchange wedding vows in what is expected to be a star-studded ceremony.
As the countdown to the big day begins, the Greek royal family has revealed some small details about the wedding, including the bride’s wedding dress.
It’s usually considered one of the best-kept secrets that royal brides keep details of their dress under wraps until their big day. For example, Princess Diana’s designer Elizabeth Emanuel talked about hiding her shop from photographers and making a backup dress in case details leaked.
“Our staff were wonderful and very loyal and didn’t speak to anyone. We kept the dress in a metal cabinet every night, guarded by two guards, Jim and Bert,” she told HELLO!.
“So there was someone there 24/7 and we put shutters on all our windows and put wrong colored threads in the garbage cans because people were rummaging through our garbage cans.”
For her wedding dress, Princess Theodora turned to Celia Kritharioti, a Greek designer known for her dramatic princess silhouettes, feminine lace details and ornate designs.
Theodora revealed that Celia was her chosen designer when she was planning her wedding in May 2020. However, it is not known if she kept her original dress or tweaked the design over the past four years. See what we know about the four-year delay to her wedding…
Delayed wedding
Princess Theodora and Matthew began dating in 2016 and announced their engagement in November 2018 while posing in front of Tower Bridge in London.
The couple had originally planned to exchange wedding vows on the Greek island of Spetses in May 2020. The outbreak of COVID-19 scuppered their plans and they celebrated the special day by cooking a special Greek meal together, including cold cuts, olives, cheese and Greek salad.
The Bold and the Beautiful actress Theodora captioned the post: “On what was supposed to be our wedding weekend, we have greatly appreciated the love and support of family and friends. We can’t wait to celebrate with you all in Greece as soon as it is safe to do so.”
The couple took three years to plan their wedding, which was scheduled to take place in spring 2023, shortly after the death of Theodora’s father, Konstantin.
The king was 82 when he died in January 2023, and Theodora and Matthew postponed their wedding again while they mourned their loss.
“It’s been two months since you left us. We miss you every day, dad. I love you,” she wrote on Instagram in March 2023.
