Despite dominance, Nebraska could actually be better in the second half

Call me a glutton. I think the Nebraska football team actually could have made this game a lot worse than it is. It could also be a lot worse than it is if a few plays in the first half hadn’t gone in the Huskers’ favor.

Yes, the score is 28-0 and it’s fun to watch Colorado out of shape like that. But there were moments when it didn’t look like NU was playing so cleanly, especially on offense, against a Buffs defense that was constantly left high and dry.

Keep in mind that without Tommy Hill’s pick six and Rahmir Johnson’s 18-yard touchdown reception that absolutely should have been a Colorado interception, the score would have been only 14-0.

As Deion Sanders ran into the locker room, he said he actually thought his defense was playing pretty well. At first glance, that comment drew a lot of ridicule, but he’s not wrong.

Yes, it feels weird to say that an offense with 200 yards of total offense and a quarterback who has thrown only three incomplete passes needs to try a little harder. But they can.

First of all, they need to run the ball more. Really focus on the running game. There were a few too many throws downfield where it felt like a wasted attempt. Let Dante Dowdell cook. Let’s see if we can get a 100-yard rusher against this Colorado front.

The added bonus here is that it would make the clock run more than it does. Consider that Nebraska and Colorado each had two possessions at the end of the first half, starting at about 2:30. Those possessions are just too fast.

Colorado has a good offense. The Cornhuskers managed to throw them off track, but they still have Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter. The last thing we want to see is a game that is down to one point in the fourth quarter.

Let this game continue to be fun. Let it be cathartic. And let the Nebraska football team prove its chances of a top-25 finish on Monday.
