While Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson struggles to regain his old form, he has a new legal problem.

On Monday, Watson was charged in Houston with sexual assault, assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

The allegations are strikingly similar to those made in more than 20 lawsuits filed against Watson in 2021. However, the plaintiff in the new case, who sued under the pseudonym Jane Doe, claims she dated Watson. Most, if not all, of the other cases revolved around paid massages arranged by Watson.

The complaint states that the appointment was set for October 10, 2020. Watson was initially unable to find her apartment, according to the lawsuit. He called her and allegedly began “aggressively screaming and yelling, stating that he could not find her apartment and that he ‘did not have time for this.'”

The lawsuit then contains the following allegations:

“When Watson finally arrived at Doe’s apartment, Doe had not finished applying makeup, so she invited Watson to sit in her living room while she got ready. While she was applying makeup in her bathroom, Doe left the bathroom door open and attempted to talk to Watson to relieve the tension after his outburst. Jane Doe quickly began to believe she was talking to herself because Watson was unresponsive.

“Jane Doe came out of her bathroom to investigate Watson’s silence and was shocked to find him completely naked on her bed, lying face down on his stomach. While Jane Doe stood there in shock, Watson turned his head and aggressively insisted that she massage him, pointing to his buttocks. Jane Doe asked if Watson meant he wanted her to massage his back, but Watson indicated he wanted to massage his buttocks.

“Jane Doe was scared to death at this point in the encounter. She was in her small apartment with a much larger man and still in shock from Watson’s outburst of anger and aggression on the phone. Doe tried to appease Watson by rubbing his back instead of his buttocks. Watson again insisted that she focus on his glutes. Seemingly frustrated that Doe was only rubbing his back, Watson then turned around, revealing an erection. Watson continued to demand that Jane Doe massage him, gesturing from his knees to his groin. Jane Doe froze in fear, unsure of how to refuse Watson’s advances without compromising her safety. Confused and frightened, she repeated to Watson that she was not a masseuse. Watson asked her what she wanted to do instead.

“Before Jane Doe could respond, Watson grabbed Jane Doe’s leg and placed her in a lying position. Watson then partially undressed Jane Doe and penetrated her vagina without her express or implied consent. Jane Doe felt paralyzed and was unsure whether to risk her safety by attempting to stop Watson or endure his assault. Watson roughly abused Jane Doe in a “missionary position” for several minutes before grabbing her and turning her over. Watson continued to aggressively attack Doe from behind. Jane Doe eventually mustered the courage and strength to escape Watson. Jane Doe quickly ran to her dresser to grab a heavy decorative piece in self-defense and yelled at Watson to get out of her apartment. Enraged, Watson stormed out of Jane Doe’s apartment.”

The statute of limitations for most personal injury cases is two years. In Texas, the statute of limitations is five years because the case specifically alleges sexual abuse.

The plaintiff is represented by Tony Buzbee, who represented many others who sued Watson in 2021.

This new case raises many questions from the perspective of the league and the Browns. It is possible that Watson will face further scrutiny under the rules of conduct. It is also possible that a suspension – if imposed – could provide the Browns with an opportunity to void his remaining salary guarantees and end the relationship.

The biggest difference between this latest case and the others is that Watson is specifically accused of sexual assault.
