Derrick Rose’s best game against the Dallas Mavericks

Derrick Rose announced his retirement on Thursday after 15 seasons in the NBA. For someone who has battled injuries his entire career, to last 15 years is simply incredible, and he will be remembered as one of the greatest “what ifs” in NBA history.

Rose became the youngest player ever to be named MVP, winning the award as a Chicago Bull in the 2010-11 season and also appearing in three All-Star games during his career. Had he not been injured, Rose could have been one of the best point guards the league has ever seen, displaying absurd athleticism from the moment he stepped foot on an NBA court.

In honor of his retirement, we look back at his best game against the Dallas Mavericks.

Rose had several games to choose from, including a 22/9/4 game against the Mavs in his rookie season, but his best game against the Mavs came in his sophomore year.

It was March 6, 2010, in Chicago. Rose missed the Dallas game a few weeks after that game, but he put together a great performance at the United Center, scoring 34 points and 8 assists while making 15 of 22 shots from the field and 4 of 4 free throws. He kept Rodrigue Beaubois in a torture chamber and kept sinking mid-range shots, especially when Dallas switched to zone defense.

The Mavericks had just acquired some of the players they needed to win the NBA championship the next season at the February 2010 trade deadline: Caron Butler, DeShawn Stevenson and Brendan Haywood. These new players were enough for Dallas to take home a 122-116 victory, a high-scoring game for that era. Dirk Nowitzki led the Mavs with 27 points, Roddy B and Butler each had 24 points, while Jason Kidd had 15 assists for all.

Rose has had some good games against the Mavs in his career, including in 2018 when he entered the Throwback Machine for the Minnesota Timberwolves and finished with 28 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists, but it’s still fair to wonder what could have been had he not been injured.
