Demolition work continues at Century III Mall as the once thriving shopping center moves closer to demolition

WEST MIFFLIN (KDKA) – Work continues on the old Century III Mall, but has now progressed beyond the parking garage. Work is also taking place inside the old mall, bringing its demolition one step closer.

According to Phil DiLucente, a West Mifflin attorney, the work inside the old mall is intended to facilitate the demolition of the exterior facade.

For those who have shopped at Century III, it is hardly a reflection of what it once was. A once thriving commercial center is slowly falling into ruin. Workers are still demolishing the parking garage, but work has already begun inside the mall.

“It took a long time. It was very exhausting. It was a process,” DiLucente said.

DiLucente: There is still some litigation ongoing, but the county is pleased with the progress. After a judge ordered them to cooperate, both the ownership group, Century III Mall PA, LLC, and the county appear to be working together in good faith. With some litigation still required between all parties, cooperation will be critical.

“Collaboration is key, and I think West Mifflin will ultimately see a beautiful site,” DiLucente said. “I think it will take a little patience, but this structure will be torn down.”

One reason for the delay in completing the work was an asbestos report that DiLucente said had already been prepared.

The work inside involves, in part, removing hazardous materials and demolishing the building. Several garbage containers are scattered where cars and customers once parked.

“It certainly won’t take as long to dismantle as it did to build, but because of the danger, I think it will take a little longer,” DiLucente said.

DiLucente said there is no timeline yet for when the mall might be demolished, but they hope to learn more in the next month.
