Part of a Hanover townhouse collapsed after a delivery truck drove through wires, tearing off part of the side of the building, officials said.

On Thursday, August 22, firefighters were called to the scene at approximately 10:49 a.m. for a report of damage to a home in the first block of Randolph Court in the borough.

When they arrived, they found that the gable end of a row of townhouses had been demolished and was dangling from the building, held up only by power and utility lines.

Bryan Spickler, captain of the Hanover Area Fire and Emergency Services, said officials are still not sure what time of day Thursday the damage occurred, but he believes the damage occurred earlier Thursday when a delivery truck made a shipment to a maintenance facility behind the townhouses.

The van did not appear to have remained at the scene of the accident, officials said.

Chris Miller, director of the Hanover County Building Inspection Department, who was on site to assess the damage, said he is working with the property manager to find a contractor to make emergency repairs.

Miller said it appeared a delivery truck had used the rear alley to access the property and had become caught in the main power line of the row of houses, causing the gable end of the building to be swept away.

Met-Ed personnel were called to the scene to shut off power to the six townhouses while repairs were made, Miller said.

The hope is that a contractor and electrician can come and make repairs to the building so residents can continue to occupy the building while permanent repairs are being made, Miller said.

“We are trying with all our might to prevent anyone from being evicted,” Miller said.

Hanover County Police are investigating the accident.
