Deer Park pipeline explosion: Witnesses describe driver’s possible medical emergency and SUV thrown through air as vehicle hits valve

DEER PARK, Texas (KTRK) – A couple told ABC13 on Monday that they witnessed a person drive into a massive pipeline in Deer Park.

Authorities believe the person in the SUV drove directly through the fence on the west side of the Walmart parking lot on Spencer Highway.

“It caught our attention because the car was going so slowly as we drove by,” said Sherry Richard, who was on her way to Walmart with her husband, Chad Richard.

ORIGINAL STORY: Police try to identify driver of SUV involved in Deer Park pipeline fire

Chad Richard couldn’t remember much about the driver’s physical description, except that he was older and wore glasses.

“All I remember is that she was wearing glasses. We were driving in circles trying to find a parking spot, and as soon as we found a spot, the car just took off,” said Chad Richard.

They compared what happened next to something they had only seen in movies.

Sherry Richard said the SUV drove through some brush, then over the fence, and eventually reached level ground before accelerating toward the pipeline.

“It hits it, and the car goes up in the air and back down, and as it hits the ground there’s a bang, and then there’s fire everywhere,” Sherry Richard said.

The couple said the driver’s behavior appeared to indicate a medical incident.

“I thought she had a heart attack or something and drifted there because it really wasn’t that fast,” Chad Richard added. “But once it was over the fence, it just picked up speed.”

Deer Park authorities did not provide any further information about the driver or his condition.

Police said the investigation was still ongoing and that the vehicle and driver had already been clearly identified.

Deer Park police and local FBI agents conducted the initial investigation, with preliminary reports indicating no terrorist activity occurred. Deer Park police are currently conducting an investigation that supports the conclusion that this appears to be an isolated incident.

Howard Williams was at the nearby Discount Tire when he heard the explosion and turned to see the car. Like many others, he wants to know the full story.

“I’m sure they’re not okay, but I’m just curious and want to know what really happened,” Williams said.
