Debby’s remains race through Valley

MID-HUDSON – As the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby moved through the region Friday afternoon, the Hudson Valley was hit by torrential rain, high winds, downed trees and power lines, and flooded areas.

Central Hudson Gas and Electric said more than 19,000 customers were without power at the height of the storm, the majority in Dutchess and Greene counties.

A Lake Carmel woman was struck by a large falling tree branch while she was getting her mail. The victim was taken by ambulance to Putnam Hospital Center where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

A section of Route 22 to the southeast was closed for hours when a large tree fell onto the road. The Taconic State Parkway was also temporarily closed when a tree fell onto both lanes near Peekskill Hollow Road on the Kent-Putnam Valley city line.

In Carmel, a tree fell on Route 301, leaving many residents of the county seat without power.

A tree fell across Buckshollow Road in Mahopac, causing a fire that led to the closure of that road near Route 6.

On the west side of the county, a large tree fell across Route 9D near Grassi Lane in Garrison, knocking down power lines and closing the road for several hours.

Utility crews had their hands full. NYSEG reported that more than 10,000 Putnam residents were without power for between two and five hours on Friday.

Sporadic power outages also occurred in Sullivan and Orange counties.

The storm knocked down large trees in Campbell Hall, and heavy rains made driving difficult on Interstate 84 between the town of Wallkill and Port Jervis.
