Deadline approaches for collecting state tax refunds before they become unclaimed property

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Time is running out for some Louisiana taxpayers. Residents have until Sept. 6 to claim millions of dollars in state tax refunds before they become unclaimed property.

The Louisiana Department of Revenue (LDR) sent Reference to unclaimed property Letters to 18,801 personal and business taxpayers advising them to claim their refunds before they are transferred to the Unclaimed Property Division of the State Revenue Service by law. The amount of unclaimed refunds that must be transferred if not claimed by the LDR is $9,344,916.

Taxpayers who receive one of these letters from LDR can claim their refund in two ways:

  • Click here and provide the requested information; OR
  • Fill out the voucher and send it back to LDR. Reference to unclaimed property Letter dated 26 July 2024

The tax office will issue a paper check to all taxpayers who file their tax returns electronically or using the voucher by the September 6 deadline.

Any refund not claimed within the time limit remains the property of the taxpayer and may be claimed from the Unclaimed Property Division of the State Treasury.
