Dax Shepard explains his “Family Square” parenting tactics and what he learned from having children

Father of two, podcast host and actor Dax Shepard shared a page from his wife Kristen Bell’s parenting handbook this week that could be the next great tactic for other families when things get tough.

The tactic is known as “bourgeoisifying a family,” Shepard told “Good Morning America” on Wednesday.

“Kristen made that up, maybe she stole it from a parenting book, I don’t know,” he said. “I’ll give her credit.”

“If there’s a problem in our house that’s going to resolve itself – we have 9- and 11-year-old little girls who are perfect – but problems are brewing, and people can describe a family as square. I think the key element is that everyone has to sit on the floor,” Shepard explained. “I’m much taller than all of them, so my wife always reminds me, ‘Sure, you’re talking at the same volume, but you’re very high and that’s very intimidating. So let’s get you on the floor.'”

He added that in a family square, “there are no interruptions. It’s a kind of ceremony. And everyone can bring up their grievances and we talk it all out. Most of the time it goes pretty well.”

The host of the Armchair Expert podcast said it’s usually a one-time incident that triggers the need for this routine, “but they can persist.”

“We’ve probably been stuck in the family square for over an hour,” he said, laughing. “We just had one recently where I was in the middle of it and I thought, ‘What’s the time limit in the family square? I think we’re going in circles.'”

Shepard also shared the most important thing he learned as a father.

“I learned to be patient, which ultimately carried over into my whole life, and I don’t know if I would have learned that without having kids,” he said. “I just learned that I was very lucky and that Kristen turned out to be — I thought she was going to be an incredible mother, but she really is incredible. She couldn’t be a better mother. I’m so grateful that my kids have her in their lives.”

How Dax Shepard makes “Armchair Expert” honest and tangible

The 49-year-old first launched his popular comedy podcast, Armchair Expert, in 2018, which he says “celebrates the messiness of being human.” He recently signed a deal with Wondery, Amazon’s podcast and entertainment company, which will release new video episodes and develop two new podcasts for fans.

Shepard has been praised by listeners for his honesty on a variety of topics he has discussed with his wife, academics and celebrities on the podcast over the past seven years, which he attributes to his love for another legendary radio host.

“I probably knew, just because I’ve been a huge fan of Howard Stern my whole life, that you can’t perform in this format, this medium, without being open. It’s a kind of pact with the audience,” he said. “You just have to be really honest and include everything that’s going on in your life. That’s the nature of the beast.”

Shepard continued, “I think I went into it with that understanding, but even after 20 years in recovery, I’m very used to speaking openly in front of strangers, so I think I’ve unwittingly practiced for quite a long time.”

The popular Hollywood power couple regularly receives feedback from their fans that the two are “hashtag relationship goals,” Shepard said, adding, “It’s very flattering, but we feel obligated to say that half the time it’s also a fight.”

“We have two young children. It’s brutal. We hate each other for a long time and then we make up,” he said candidly. “I think it’s important to be honest about the work that goes into it. I don’t think you’re going to have an unhappy love affair in your life and that it’s going to be easy. I think everything you like in life is going to be challenging and require work.”

The new season of Armchair Expert is available now on Wondery and YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts.
