Dawid Malan: England batsman retires from international cricket

English batsman Dawid Malan has retired from international cricket at the age of 36.

Malan is one of only two men, along with Jos Buttler, to have scored a century for England in all three formats, playing in 22 Tests, 30 One-Day Internationals and 62 T20s.

In 2020, he became the world’s best T20 batsman, becoming the fastest player to reach 1,000 international runs in the format, taking just 24 innings to do so.

The left-hander was part of the England team that won the 2022 T20 World Cup but has not played an international match since the 50-over World Cup in November.

“It’s been an incredible journey since July 2017,” said Malan. “I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to play for England in all three formats.”

“Cricket, like most sports, is an industry where almost everyone retires at some point wishing they had done a little more. Whether you’ve played 10 Tests or 100, many leave with the regret of not having played one more, scored a few more runs or won more trophies.

“Now that I’m retiring from international cricket, I can say I’m really happy.”

In conversation with the Times, externalMalan said that despite “exceeding all expectations” in white-ball cricket, he felt he could have played more Test matches.

“Test cricket has always been the highlight of my youth,” he said.

“Sometimes I played well, but in between I just wasn’t good enough or consistent enough. That was disappointing because I felt like I was a better player.”
