Davante Adams calls sideline meeting and fires up Raiders offense

BALTIMORE – After more than six quarters of weak offensive football – the Las Vegas Raiders had only gained 43 yards on offense at halftime, including just 4 yards on the ground – Davante Adams had had enough.

So the three-time first-team All-Pro receiver called a lively meeting on the sidelines in hopes of adding momentum to the offense against the Baltimore Ravens.

“It was … not loud, but I had to talk a little louder and use some voices to get the guys going,” Adams said. “When I saw everyone’s eyes, a switch flipped and it looked like … a different team. We can’t be a team that’s just one-dimensional and the defense keeps control out there every time.”

Message received.

Las Vegas, which trailed by 10 points with more than 10 minutes left, took its first win of the season, 26-23. According to ESPN Research, the Raiders had lost 49 consecutive games when trailing by 10 or more points in the fourth quarter since the 2016 season opener against the New Orleans Saints.

Of course, the Raiders’ defense was crucial to the comeback, as linebacker Robert Spillane intercepted a deflected ball from Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson midway through the third quarter. Spillane later deflected a pass from Jackson, forcing a punt midway through the fourth quarter.

Then there was defensive end Maxx Crosby, who sacked Jackson twice. He celebrated the win with a hug from Raiders owner Mark Davis and a victory cigar, acknowledging Adams’ recognition of the need for the offense to contribute.

“We have a really tight locker room,” Crosby said. “You hear the noise, we hear the noise. But at the end of the day, it’s about responding, and that’s what the guys did today. So I’m really happy for him. We’ve just got to keep going and make it a consistent thing.”

In the first half, Raiders quarterback Gardner Minshew was accurate but not productive, completing 14 of his 16 passes for just 64 yards through the air. And eight of his 14 passes were thrown at or behind the line of scrimmage, averaging just 1.6 yards per attempt, according to ESPN Research.

In the second half, Minshew, who benefited from a questionable face mask penalty, focused on Adams, who took two timely pass interference penalties and made an acrobatic toe-tap grab down the sideline for a 25-yard run, and rookie tight end Brock Bowers.

Adams finished the game with nine catches on 12 passes for 110 yards and a 1-yard touchdown, while Bowers caught all nine passes for 98 yards. In a franchise that boasts Hall of Famers Fred Biletnikoff and Cliff Branch as a duo in the 1970s and Tim Brown and Jerry Rice in the early 2000s, Adams and Bowers became the first teammates in Raiders history to each have at least nine catches and 90 receiving yards in a game.

And Minshew, who finished completing 30 of 38 passes for 276 yards with one touchdown and one interception, became the Raiders’ first starting quarterback to win after being sacked five times in a game since Andrew Walter in Week 8 of the 2006 season against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“It was a great feeling, man,” Minshew said. “Tae was really involved. Brock was really fun.”

“That’s what it can be. And that’s our challenge — being consistent with that. I’m excited to continue to build on that momentum. I think everyone feels pretty good about it. There’s a lot of shots to clean up, (and) we’ll do that, but I think everyone feels and believes what we can be as an offense.”

With a hat tip to the defense, of course.

At least it kept the Raiders in the game in the first half, limiting Jackson to 20 rushing yards before a 15-yard run on the final play. Next up is another mobile quarterback: Bryce Young of the winless Carolina Panthers.

“It doesn’t mean we’re going to win the Super Bowl just because we did that,” Adams said. “But I think it means a lot to us in this locker room that we gave it our all after not starting the way we wanted to in the first game, let alone the first half.”
