Darius Rucker probably wants to forget his arrest for drug possession, and if he serves his sentence, he can.

Last week, the singer pleaded guilty to a charge of simple possession of a controlled substance.

• Rucker was arrested in February 2024, but the traffic stop that led to the charges occurred in February 2023.
• Rucker was caught during a traffic stop in Williamson County, Tennessee with 14 purple pills, a THC pen and a small marijuana joint.
• The pills were identified as psilocin, an ingredient in magic mushrooms.

Rucker was initially charged with two counts of illegal possession of a motor vehicle and driving with an expired registration. WSMV-TV in Nashville reports that one count of illegal possession of a motor vehicle and the charge of driving with an expired registration were dropped.

By pleading no contest, Rucker waives his right to a trial and accepts a suspended sentence of 11 months and 29 days. If he completes the probation period, the charges will be dropped.

Why was Darius Rucker arrested?

Rucker was stopped by a Franklin Police Department officer for a traffic violation and the officer smelled marijuana coming from the car. Rucker admitted to smoking weed in that vehicle, but not that night (February 19, 2023).

During a search, the pills, pen and joint were found. Rucker said his girlfriend at the time gave him the pills and he didn’t know what they were. The police officer let him go and…

“A year later, I got a call from a friend who said, ‘I think I just saw an arrest warrant for you,'” he said. People in May.

So he turned himself in and someone paid the $10,500 bail to get him released. He assumed someone was trying to make an example of him, “and they did.”

The arrest comes amid a series of country music-related police encounters. Chris Young was arrested in January, and all charges were dropped shortly thereafter. Morgan Wallen was arrested in April, and felony charges are still pending.

Following the court hearing on Tuesday (September 10), Rucker’s attorney issued the following statement:
