Danny Kanell criticizes referee after Georgia Tech’s surprise win over Florida State

Georgia Tech shocks Florida State in Dublin! | Andy Staples’ immediate reaction | 08/24/24

Danny Kanell has still not come to terms with the face that State of Florida lost against Georgia Tech Institute on Saturday. The former Seminoles quarterback, who is now a sports analyst for CBS, took to social media after the loss and criticized the officials in a post on X.

Kanell pointed to one particular play in the fourth quarter. With less than a minute left, Georgia Tech ran the ball and appeared to fall out of bounds. It’s unclear if the runner left before or after the whistle, but Kanell seems to believe the clock should have stopped.

Georgia Tech pushed the ball forward a little further and finally kicked the game-winning field goal as time expired. Thanks to time management at the end of the game, the Yellow Jackets left the field with a 24-21 victory.

The game remained evenly matched for most of the game, with neither team leading by more than a touchdown the entire time. The score was 14-14 at halftime and remained that way through the fourth quarter.

Georgia Tech took the lead with the first play of the fourth quarter, Jamal Haynes scored a touchdown to make it 21-14. The Seminoles responded by marching forward on the next drive and scoring their own touchdown to tie the score with 6:33 left.

Then, on the ensuing drive, the Yellow Jackets systematically ran down the clock to score the game-winning field goal. It was a big surprise, as Florida State opened the season as the No. 10 team in the AP poll.

This loss will certainly put the Seminoles at risk of relegation and will make their goal of defending their conference title much more difficult.

“I mean, I know how we work and I know what this team is about. So I think we basically just need to focus on ourselves.” Running back Lawrance Toafili said“You know. We just have to get better, and that’s how we’re going to go about our work.”

FSU will look to rebound next week when it faces Boston College in Tallahassee on Sept. 2.
