Dana Nessel calls on the Supreme Court to overturn the ruling on gay marriage

Attorney General of Michigan Dana Nettle In his speech at the Democratic Party Convention on Thursday, Trump called on the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn a 2015 decision declaring the ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional.

Nessel spoke on the third evening of her party’s convention in Chicago and described Vice President Kamala Harris as a candidate who, if elected in November, would defend abortion and LGBT rights.

“As California’s Attorney General, Kamala Harris has never shied away from a good fight,” Nessel said. “She has held polluters, sex offenders, and transnational gangs accountable. But what really stands out is when she has stood up and protected the liberties of her constituents.” Michigan’s Attorney General continued:

In 2011, she refused to defend California’s ban on same-sex marriage. She refused to argue that some families should have fewer rights than others. That was a lie. She fought for families like mine. Now, in 2022, I faced a similar situation when I went to Roe v. Wade was overturned, Michigan’s archaic abortion ban was revived. But Vice President Harris stood behind me. And she reminded me that our job is to protect people’s lives and defend their rights. And just as California’s ban on same-sex marriage was overturned, Michigan’s abortion ban was overturned.

I have a message for Republicans and the justices of the Supreme Court of the United States. You can rip this wedding ring out of my cold, dead, gay hand. And I have a lot of water retention, so good luck with that.

Amid applause, the Attorney General concluded by saying that if elected president, Harris would appoint progressive judges to the Supreme Court.

In an obvious reference to the former president Donald Trump’s On legal issues, Neesel said of Harris: “And let me tell you, Kamala knows that you go from the courthouse to the White House, not the other way around.”

Nessel is married to Alanna Maguire since the year the court ruled in a groundbreaking move that gay and lesbian couples could marry nationwide Obergefell vs Hodges Verdict.
