Woman loses Rs 56,000 to cybercriminals – cell phone camera turned on

Lucknow: In a case of digital arrestA woman was caught on her phone camera at her residence in Hazratganj and cheated of over Rs 56,000. A case was registered in this connection on Sunday.
The Jopling Road resident said she received a call from an unknown cellphone number around 9am on August 20.
In the auto-generated call, the woman was told that her SBI credit card payment was overdue. She was then transferred to an agent who told her that if she did not pay the payment, her account would be frozen and blocked within two hours. The victim said that she did not have an SBI card. The caller then asked her to speak to two police officers via video call (a logo of Hyderabad Police was visible in the background of the video call). The victim was asked in a threatening manner to sit quietly in front of the camera. “Otherwise, you will be prosecuted,” the miscreants told the victim.
The officer posing as a police officer asked for her Aadhaar card and took her photograph. After checking her Aadhaar card, they informed her that her Aadhaar card was linked to a person named Naresh Goyal, who was working in a Money laundering case. They told her that she was a suspect in a money laundering crime. Then, under the pretext of the investigation, he demanded some money from her. She was asked to deposit it digitally into the bank account he provided. He shared the bank account details via WhatsApp.
When she deposited the money into the account the criminals had shared with her, they asked her to deposit the money into another bank account and asked her to write down the bank details.
She deposited Rs 49,999 and Rs 6,500 in two Paytm transactions. After that, she was asked to keep the camera on as she would be questioned on camera. She was also told to keep sending WhatsApp messages to mark her presence and keep the camera on. She was asked to pay a security deposit of Rs 50,000, but she refused. Later, she informed the police. SHO, Hazratganj, Vikram Singh, said that an FIR was registered on the complaint.
