Curb work on Route 166, paving work in Toms River

TOMS RIVER, NJ — Motorists should avoid Route 166 starting Wednesday as road resurfacing begins between Presidential Boulevard and Lomell Lane, the state Department of Transportation announced Tuesday.

Work on the 1-mile section, part of a $5.4 million maintenance project, is expected to be completed in late fall, according to the NJDOT.

Beginning at 7 a.m. Wednesday, there will be shoulder closures on Route 166 in both directions during the day for curb and sidewalk repairs and drainage improvements.

Work will continue Wednesday and Thursday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will be suspended over Labor Day weekend as NJDOT will not allow lane closures from 6 a.m. Friday through noon Tuesday, Sept. 3. After the holiday, work will resume daily on Route 166.

NJDOT officials said the work will last several weeks, so drivers are asked to slow down, use caution and expect delays when traveling through the area.

Milling and paving is expected to begin in late September once curb and sidewalk repairs are completed. Work will be done overnight.

Working hours are Monday to Thursday nights from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. the following day.

Route 166 will be narrowed to one lane from the intersection of Presidential Boulevard/Old Freehold Road to Lomell Lane and there will be alternating traffic during this time.

Due to milling and paving work, it may be necessary to close ramps. In such cases, diversions will be set up.
