CSUN falls to 8th place at Texas Tech at the end of the away tour

LUBBOCK, Texas – The CSUN women’s soccer team fell to No. 8 Texas Tech on Sunday at the John Walker Soccer Complex. The Red Raiders stunned the Matadors with two early goals and scored two more in the second half to win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Ashley Torres took the first shot on goal in the second minute of the game and forced Faith Nguyen to make a save. From then on, however, Texas Tech went on the offensive and scored the first goal of the game. Jillian Martinez’s shot was saved by the goalkeeper Riley Lovebagbut Alana Harry picked up the rebound after the save and scored to make it 1-0.

CSUN’s defense kept Texas Tech from scoring after a barrage of Red Raider attempts. In the 18th minute, Liebsack deflected a shot by Ashleigh Williams before Torres assisted Liebsack to deflect a second shot by Williams.

Texas Tech, however, broke through again in the 19th minute after a beautifully executed play that saw Kaitlyn Giametta send a cross up the middle and Peyton Parsons come in to finish on goal. Liebsack saved two shots in the final 10 minutes of the first half to help put the game at 2-0 heading into halftime.

In the second half, the Red Raiders opened the scoring on a corner kick, with Parsons setting up Taylor Zdrojewski in front of the goal. Similar to the first goal of the game, Texas Tech again scored on a rebound when Liebsack blocked a shot from Elise Anderson, but Zdrojewski cleaned up with a goal to put the team up 4-0.

Brianna Lozano caught CSUN’s only shot attempt of the second half, but Nguyen made the save, preventing the Matadors from scoring.

GAME NOTES

  • Texas Tech improves to 1-1 this season, while CSUN falls to 0-2.
  • The Red Raiders led in shots 31-3 and had a 16-3 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Texas Tech also led in corner kicks with 6:0.
  • Liebsack saved a total of 11 shots in her second consecutive appearance as goalkeeper for CSUN.
  • Angelica Claiborne And Sami Kolin played the most minutes for CSUN with 70 each.

CSUN will host its first home game of 2024 on Thursday, August 22 against Idaho. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
