CPS students return to school with some changes

CINCINNATI (WXIX) – Wednesday is the first day of school for many students, and one of the state’s largest school districts is starting up again today.

Cincinnati Public Schools, the second largest school district in Ohio, serves over 35,000 students, and this school year will bring some changes.

Seventh and eighth grade students now ride Metro buses to school instead of the traditional yellow buses. Parents can ride with their children for free to ensure their comfort.

Cincinnati Metro has provided families with some safety tips to make the ride as smooth as possible:

  • Never run after the bus. If the driver has already started driving, you will be asked not to run after the bus or bang on the door.
  • Do not cross the street in front of the bus. Instead, wait until the bus starts moving to cross the street.
  • While drivers are required to stop when a yellow bus stops, they are not required to do so when riding a Metro bus.
  • Download the Transit app to track the bus and get the latest updates.

Shauna Murphy, acting superintendent of Cincinnati Public Schools, says the new program with Metro will help ensure students get to school on time.

“I’m extremely confident. In fact, Metro’s punctuality is much higher than what we’ve seen in the past with the yellow buses. However, our transportation department has been working with both our yellow bus companies and Metro. There’s new software that allows us to track routes to make sure kids get to school and back home safely,” Murphy said.

In addition, students will return to school with a new cell phone policy. They will be required to place their phones in a bag during class. Staff will unlock these bags at the end of the day.
