Although the Dallas Cowboys came through Thursday’s game against the New York Giants with a 20-15 win, Micah Parsons’ ankle injury is the team’s biggest concern.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said on Friday’s episode: Good morning football that the “initial diagnosis” was an upper ankle sprain for Parsons, but the MRI will provide clarity on the severity of the injury (starts at :55).

Micah Parsons says he knows “very little” about the severity of his ankle injury. Have an MRI tomorrow but will try to be back in the hospital next week #Steelers. https://t.co/ij14gwfBxr

The injury occurred as Parsons lined up in the middle of the defensive line. He was engaged to Giants center John Michael Schmitz Jr. and at the same time, Giants guard Greg Van Roten fell and landed on the back of the Cowboys star’s lower left leg.

Parsons managed to walk to the sideline, albeit with a noticeable limp. He was then taken on a cart from the sidelines to the locker room to undergo an X-ray.

Head coach Mike McCarthy had no update about Parsons during his postgame press conference.

Parsons was one of two key Cowboys defenders injured during the game. DeMarcus Lawrence did not return after leaving the third quarter with a foot injury, but said afterward that he would be fine. WFAA’s Ed Werder noted that Lawrence will also undergo an MRI on Friday.

Since the Cowboys play on Thursday night, they benefit from two additional days off, giving Parsons and Lawrence additional time to recover. Their next game is October 6th against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Parsons got off to a slow start this season under new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. The three-time Pro Bowler has six quarterback hits but only one sack in four games.

Thursday’s win improved the Cowboys’ record to 2-2, although they are still trying to find a rhythm on offense. An encouraging sign was that the run defense rebounded significantly, allowing just 26 yards through four days after giving up a total of 464 yards on the ground in the last two games.
