Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson probably did not tear his ACL after being injured in Sunday’s 33-17 win over the Cleveland Browns, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Ferguson is scheduled to undergo an MRI scan of his left knee on Monday, according to Calvin Watkins of Dallas Morning News.

According to Watkins, Ferguson felt he could have played despite his injury and hoped it was just a strain.

The 25-year-old left the field in the third quarter of the Cowboys’ win over the Browns after being tackled. His return was considered questionable, but he did not return to the game.

Ferguson was targeted five times on Sunday and recorded three catches for 15 yards.

Patrik Walker of the team’s official website revealed that the tight end left the Dallas locker room without crutches or a splint and was only wearing an ice pack on his knee.

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott also expressed optimism about Ferguson’s future prospects in a conversation with reporters after the game.

“I think we avoided a big mistake,” Prescott said, according to Jon Machota of The Athletic. “Talking to him, he gave me a lot of confidence that he’s going to be OK.”

Ferguson is coming off a stellar 2023 season and was named to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career. The former fourth-round pick made 71 catches for 761 yards and five touchdowns and gradually developed into one of Prescott’s top options in the passing game.

In his last seven appearances, including the Cowboys’ only playoff game last season, Ferguson has averaged eight passes per game, while catching 41 balls for 433 yards.

He was expected to remain one of Dallas’ top offensive players in his third season, and he earned high praise from offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer in training camp.

“When you look at this guy and his leadership skills and he’s found his voice in this room, he’s very respected,” Schottenheimer said, via Ben Grimaldi of Cowboys Wire. “He sets the tone.”

If Ferguson is out for some time, Dallas will likely have to rely on his backup Luke Schoonmaker until he can return.
