Emmitt Smith shares his thoughts on the Dallas Cowboys defense

The Baltimore Ravens took an early lead on Sunday and held on to it until the end against the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium.
Baltimore (0-2) took advantage early and extended its lead in the second quarter before the end of the half. Dallas (1-1) is hoping for a comeback after a poor performance in Week 2, but was down 21-6 at halftime.
Lamar Jackson completed 10 of his 11 passing attempts to start the game for 161 yards and a touchdown. Dak Prescott and the Cowboys offense, however, struggled to find their rhythm and went without a touchdown in the first two quarters. But a 19-point fourth quarter for Dallas made it a one-score game.

It’s clear early on that the Ravens are playing with determination. According to Sports Illustrated, from 1990 to 2023, only 2.5% of teams that started 0-3 made the playoffs – a fate Baltimore was able to avoid.

For nearly three and a half quarters, it looked like the Cowboys had no chance in this game. That changed when the Cowboys scored three touchdowns in three consecutive drives. The third of those came from Prescott’s arm to wide receiver KaVontae Turpin for 16 yards. Dallas is now down by three points and needs a defensive stop and a score to complete the comeback. 28-25, Ravens.
Dallas regained possession with an onside kick and narrowed the lead again. Prescott found wide receiver Jalen Tolbert for a 15-yard touchdown pass, followed by an unsuccessful attempt at a 2-point conversion, cutting the lead to 28-18.
It took until well into the fourth quarter for it to happen, but the Cowboys finally managed to score a touchdown. The offense sustained a six-play, 64-yard drive that was capped by a 1-yard run from Prescott to the quarterback keeper. They failed to attempt a 2-point conversion, cutting their deficit to 28-12.
After halftime, Dallas hopes to find a way to stop the bleeding after another ugly half. But the Ravens continued their attack on the ground. This time, Henry scores from 26 yards to extend Baltimore’s lead to 28-6.
Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey scored three more points with 2 seconds left in the half to narrow the lead heading into the locker room. But the Cowboys continued in a similar vein after their poor performance against the Saints in Week 2, struggling to score on offense, getting stops on defense and hurting themselves with penalties.
After a three-touchdown first quarter, the second quarter was far less explosive on offense. The Ravens scored again with less than 30 seconds left in the first half, capping an eight-play, 88-yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Rashod Bateman to extend their lead to 21-3.
At this point, the Cowboys defense is on the ropes and struggling. After a drive that left them scarred earlier in the game, they’re now back on the ropes with a similar result. This time, it was a long catch-and-run that ended with Derrick Henry capping a seven-play, 70-yard drive from 1 yard out to extend their lead.
The Cowboys’ talented kicker rescued a stalled drive with a 65-yard field goal, the longest in team history. Aubrey’s kick was just 1 yard short of tying the league record. Dallas cuts the score to 7-3.
New week, new opponent, same old 2024 Cowboys defense. After punting on their first offensive drive, the Dallas defense let Lamar Jackson and the Ravens offense march down the field and complete a five-play, 71-yard drive capped by a 9-yard touchdown run by Jackson.

Predictions for Ravens vs. Cowboys
NFL.com: The majority are picking the Ravens over the Cowboys. The folks at NFL.com seem to think the Baltimore-Dallas battle could be close, but it will take some time for the Cowboys to regain their confidence after last week’s performance. Of the five picks, each one picked a game with a specific score in one way or another, but only two people picked a Cowboys win.
USA TODAY: A majority of picks are picking the Cowboys over the Ravens. USA TODAY’s editors seem to favor the Cowboys more, with three of their four picks leaning toward Dallas. However, they all believe it will be a close game, with the largest margin of victory being three points.
Tony Catalina, Austin American-Statesman: The cowboys are coming back.
No team that started 0-3 has ever won a Super Bowl, and the Ravens head to Dallas with that fact in mind. It’s hard not to call the Cowboys hypocrites if they can go out there and play like they did last week.
In recent seasons under Mike McCarthy, Dak Prescott and Co. have proven they can respond well to adversity after a big loss, posting a 12-2 record in such scenarios since 2021. They will have to do that again on Sunday if they want to avoid falling below .500.
It will be a close game with both teams trading blows throughout, but Dallas has a bad taste in their mouth and that feeling of embarrassment could be enough to give them the win in this one. Cowboys, 27–23.
