Labor Day, a day to celebrate and thank the nation’s workers, also brings with it a number of closures in Illinois and across the country. But what exactly will be open and closed on the holiday?

This year the national holiday falls on Monday, September 2nd.

Some businesses will close their doors and give their employees the holiday off, while others will limit their operations to reduced hours.

Which retailers are open on Labor Day?

What else is closed on Labor Day?

USPS

Labor Day is one of eleven holidays observed by the United States Postal Service. This means that all U.S. post offices are closed and no mail is delivered on Monday.

FedEx and UPS

FedEx and UPS will not offer pickup or delivery services on Labor Day. Some FedEx locations will have modified hours. Contact your local FedEx office for information and times.

Some UPS locations will be closed while others will be open with modified hours, so please contact your local UPS location for information and hours of operation.

Banks

Banks are closed on holidays, including Labor Day. Some banking services may still be available, such as self-service ATMs for those who need to withdraw money or make a deposit.

Schools

Labor Day is considered a “statutory school holiday,” which means many schools across the state remain closed. While there are some holidays that can be “modified” or “suppressed,” Labor Day is not one of them, according to the Illinois State Board of Education.

These days only include:

  • The birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (third Monday in January);
  • President Abraham Lincoln’s birthday (February 12);
  • Casimir Pulaski’s birthday (first Monday in March);
  • Columbus Day (second Monday in October); and
  • Veterans Day (November 11)* (see below)
