Control 2 not affected by Annapurna Interactive’s mass resignations

According to a report by Bloomberg, 25 Annapurna Interactive employees resigned from the company in September following a dispute with Annapurna Pictures founder Megan Ellison.

Annapurna Interactive is the video game publishing arm of Annapurna Pictures. Former Annapurna Interactive president Nathan Gary reportedly negotiated with Ellison to make the game publishing division independent. Gary and two other co-heads of Annapurna Interactive left the company in early September, The Hollywood Reporter wrote at the time. According to the Bloomberg report, the other employees followed later.

“All 25 members of the Annapurna Interactive team have collectively resigned,” Gary and the former Annapurna Interactive employees said in a joint statement to Bloomberg. “This was one of the most difficult decisions we have ever had to make and we did not take this action lightly.”

Details of the dispute have not yet been disclosed.

A spokesperson for Annapurna Interactive told Bloomberg that the contracted games and projects would remain with Annapurna. Still, the news of the resignation raised many questions about the state of the publisher and its contracted developers: How will Annapurna Interactive support its newly released and upcoming games without staff? Observers also wondered: What about the recently announced partnership with Remedy Entertainment? Remedy and Annapurna announced in late August that the companies would jointly finance Control 2 and is developing TV and film adaptations for Remedy’s Alan Wake and Control series.

Thomas Puha, communications director at Remedy, confirmed in a post to X on Thursday that nothing will change with Control 2 or its licensing rights. The deal with Annapurna is tied to Annapurna Pictures, not Annapurna Interactive, he said. Control 2 will be self-published by Remedy. “By supporting Remedy’s move toward self-publishing, we are putting our faith in their vision,” said Hector Sanchez, co-founder and president of interactive and new media at Annapurna Interactive, who recently returned to the company after leaving Epic Games.

Annapurna Interactive is one of the most renowned – if not the most renowned – game publisher, known for publishing award-winning games such as What Remains of Edith Finch, Gorogoa, Outer Wilds, Cocoon, And StrayingAs an editor, you are usually responsible for financing, marketing and quality assurance.
